The northern regional finalists for this year's Young Chef Young Waiter competition have been selected at heats held in Darlington and County Durham.
Under-25s in the early stages of their careers in hospitality jobs battled it out to gain a place in the national final of the Restaurant Association event, which is sponsored by Von Essen.
Previous winners of the prestigious award include Marcus Wareing, who now runs his own restaurant at the Berkeley Hotel in London.
"For 25 years, Young Chef Young Waiter has encouraged and promoted aspiring talent in the hospitality industry," said Bob Walton chairman of the association.
"It's almost guaranteed that anyone who enters will emerge wiser and more skilled."
Another group of talented individuals who are working as chefs or waiters will battle it out in the southern heats later this week.
The overall winner of each category will be announced on October 6th and each will receive a £2,000 prize, plus a three-day culinary course sponsored by S.Pellegrino at the University of Alma, based in Parma, Italy.
