Up to 20 restaurant jobs are to be created in Hertfordshire as Italian restaurant chain Prezzo has taken over the oldest pub in Bishop's Stortford, reports the Herts and Essex Observer.
The chain's £1 million acquisition of The George Hotel will see it competing for customers against French cafe Brasserie Gerard.
Prezzo has more than 140 restaurants in the UK and bought the inn from the country's largest pub company Punch Taverns.
It will invest around £1 million in restoring the 26-room listed building which had its foundations laid down in the 14th century.
Prezzo chief executive Jonathan Kaye said: "Our aim is to make a beautiful restaurant in a beautiful old building that we will convert sympathetically, but bring up to date."
Elsewhere, Inverclyde Council's planning board recently approved in principle a £180 million plan to create hotel jobs with the regeneration of the James Watt Dock in Greenock.
