Jamie Oliver's head baker at London's Fifteen restaurant, Kenny Rankin, will encourage young chefs to take up apprenticeships as part of the Real Bread Campaign and to mark National Apprenticeship Week, which is currently underway.

Fifteen offers a 12-month scheme where apprentices learn basic bread-making to achieve NVQ 2 qualifications as part of their course at Lewisham College.

A group of apprentices will begin a three-week spell of working with Mr Rankin in a bid to hone their bakery skills on Monday (February 8th).

Mr Rankin highlighted the value of apprenticeships for up-and-coming chefs.

He said: "You can teach them the basics but there's also the Swiss and French style bakery that's invaluable learning. Baking is such a dying art and is one of the oldest and most important skills we can teach the apprentices."

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver is busy expanding his operations and was reported recently to have teamed up with New York chef Adam Perry-Lang as well as experienced restaurant operator Kevin Bacon to open a restaurant in the City of London.
