Landlords and businesses need to come to better rent agreements in order to secure restaurant work in the future, according to one expert, who said the present situation needs to be reviewed.

Retail Ireland director Torlach Denihan noted that rent is an unavoidable cost for most businesses and at the moment landlords are trying to increase payments even though some restaurants are struggling.

"Rents are a huge component of the retail cost base but are almost impossible to reduce. Some landlords have successfully sought or are currently seeking very substantial rent increases under upward-only rent review clauses," he stated.

Mr Denihan added that some restaurants, like Carluccio's, have had their future put in jeopardy by threatened rent increases.

The Daily Post recently reported that local business woman Angharad Anwyl decided to invest in a restaurant and bar venture, which cost her around £200,000 and will create restaurant work in the Caernarfon region.
