Over-65s given opportunity to stay in hospitality jobs for longer

Plans have been announced by the government to phase out the default retirement age (DRA) in the UK by October 2011, which will allow older people to stay in their hospitality jobs for longer.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), which has campaigned for many years to remove the DRA, welcomed the proposal.

"Our research has shown that many employees wish to work past retirement for differing reasons and many employers are already benefiting from allowing such flexibility," said Dianah Worman, diversity adviser at the CIPD.

She went on to say that the DRA abolition will allow employers to continue to benefit from the knowledge, skills and experience of their older workers.

Ms Worman also encouraged all firms to look at the potential cost-saving benefits that keeping older, more experienced staff in employment has.

Under current government rules, employers can make their staff retire at 65, regardless of their circumstances.
