Former miners' union to become bar and casino

Chef jobs, along with other catering positions, could become available in Sheffield if plans to convert the former National Union of Mineworkers' (NUM's) headquarters into a 24-hour casino with bars and restaurants go ahead.
The proposals would create up to 130 jobs and are likely to be approved by the local council next week, reports the Yorkshire Post.
City planners quoted in the report describe a "striking, post-modern" building which could be extended and updated in order to fit with the atmosphere planned by developer the Brook Group, which already operates two nightclubs nearby.
The planners' analysis adds that the amended scheme involves making considerably less changes to the structure of the iconic building than were previously mooted.
Nevertheless, the proposals have met with a degree of criticism. Green Party councillor Rob Murphy said that residents "already encounter late-night noise and anti-social behaviour" and argued opening hours in the venue should be restricted to fall into line with the nearby pubs and clubs.
Union president Arthur Scargill had the offices built when moving the NUM headquarters from London to Sheffield in the 1980s.
