Plans to convert Coventry's County Hall into a bar and a restaurant could create sommelier jobs and other catering positions in the city.

The 18th century building has not been used since 1989 and an application for a full premises licence has been submitted to city planners, according to the Coventry Telegraph.

It was previously occupied by the city's crown court but would become a late-night venue offering karaoke and open-mic nights as well as food and drink should the plans go ahead.

However, local residents have expressed some concerns about the scheme, which they fear could increase noise levels in the area.

In a letter of objection, they said: "The prospect of noise and drinkers spilling onto the street outside our home until four every morning through the week is very distressing."

Coventry is also likely to see a boost in catering employment this year through the London 2012 Olympics, which will bring tourist trade to the city as it hosts Olympic football at the City of Coventry Stadium.
