Entertainment and hospitality chain Barracuda has been granted permission to transform a historic Kings Lynn post office into a bar and restaurant, creating 35 full and part-time jobs in the process.

Described as the fastest-growing managed pub company in the UK on the chain's website, Barracuda should provide opportunities in restaurant work, bar jobs and management.

A condition given to the developers was "to retain as much of the panelling [on the old post office counter salvaged from London's Waterloo Bridge in the 1930s] as possible", based on months of debate over whether to have the building listed due to its history.

Alison Gifford, chairman of the King's Lynn civic society, told the Eastern Daily Press: "It seems to me that having unique features at any venue, especially one where the public goes, can only improve and enhance the experience for the people who go there."

Formed in 2000, the award-winning Barracuda Group seeks "keen, enthusiastic" people when recruiting and claims to provide career progression opportunities and "a satisfying role" for its staff.

Around 12 new bar jobs are set to be created when a new "late-night destination" opens this week in St Neots in South Street, it has been reported.

Called Worx, the establishment will be the first of its kind in the town and the project is managed by Ethos Entertainment, who operate the nearby Kings Head pub, according to the Hunts Post.

The owners of the new facility believe it will be a boost to the economy of the late-night sector in that it will inspire a greater influx of people to the town, in the hope that "quality venues attract quality people".

Iain Mack, general manager of the club, told the newspaper: "For the first time in the town's history a building has been renovated to serve as a nightclub. This will be a great asset to a town of this size."

Featuring RnB and dance music, the entertainment centre is set over three levels "offering a relaxed and contemporary feel" and will accommodate around 500 party-goers, who have the choice of a dance area and bar, an exclusive VIP area and a chill-out first floor.

Serving as a party destination by night, the venue will also act as a coffeeshop during the day.

The town council says St Neots offers "much of interest to be seen" for the tourist and leisure seeker.

Italian restaurant and bar Piccolino and Chandos Deli will be opening branches at Bristol's "retail and leisure destination" Cabot Circus at Quakers Friars, it has been reported, providing promising opportunities for seekers of restaurant work and bar jobs.

The two establishments will join up-market venues such as Harvey Nichols Second Floor Restaurant and Bar, according to the Retail Bulletin.

Piccolino will be the 30th UK opening for the restaurant group, reports the news provider, with the Chandos outlet (based in Bristol), seeing its eighth opening so far in the south-west region.

Keith Stone, leasing director of developers Bristol Alliance, told the publication: "Quakers Friars will bring a new continental-style experience to Bristol's city centre. There is nothing like it elsewhere in the UK."

The robot, named Mr Asahi after its creator, Japanese-owned Asahi Beer, can reportedly serve a bottle of beer in two minutes and has done just that at the Selfridges launch.

Taking 200 man hours to put together, the invention's animatronics required to open a bottle of beer or pull a pint are operated by a computer which regulates compressed air through specialised valves and electronic switches.

It has been training for six months up to its big day and its production cost £100,000, according to the Belfast Telegraph.

Mr Asahi event manager, Graham Sandry, told the publication: "He ties in relevantly to the modern image of Japan and also a modern up-to-date lifestyle."

It is yet unclear whether the model will be adapted as a concept showpiece for bars and pubs, but Mr Asahi will be performing at Selfridges in Manchester on July 10th this year.

McAlister Holdings, which is taking on the job, visualises a boost to the influx of visitors to the region if their intentions are given the green light.

The hotel will include 200 bedrooms, a restaurant and spa and leisure facilities as well as conference and weddings.

Mervyn McAlister, managing director at the company, told the publication: "We believe that our proposals represent a unique opportunity to create a significant tourist facility which will not only be a landmark in Ballycastle but will become a premier destination resort hotel in Ireland."

"This will deliver a major boost for local tourism and the local economy", he added.

The establishment describes itself as "the perfect setting for your family destination or for the solo explorer", surrounded as it is by well-known tourist attractions such as the Giants Causeway.

Planning permission has been approved for a new budget hotel in Caernarfon in Gwynedd, north-west Wales, with around 45 local jobs in the offing, according to a source.

The 59-bedroom Travelodge will be created at Victoria Dock, which is described as a "prime waterside location" by the Daily Post.

As well as the new hotel making up part of a £27 million development of the area, a restaurant, pub and craft shop will also be created, together with flats, offices and a doctor's surgery.

Caerfarnon's new hotel forms part of the current £69.9 million Travelodge expansion, which will see around seven branches spring up across the country.

Paul Harvey, property director for the organisation, said: "As price and location continue to drive consumer behavior we are seeing customers shift to budget hotel accommodation … [the new development will] make hotels available to more people than ever before."

Travelodge employs around 5,000 staff and attributes the success of its business to its people, therefore seeks "high calibre individuals" during recruitment.

The survey from Maritz Research saw 22 per cent of people saying they would now eat at the pub more due to the absence of indoor cigarette smoke, reports Big Hospitality.

Businesses who have consciously improved the standard of their food service since the ban were shown to have benefited the most, according to the source.

Stephen Harwood, client services director at Maritz Research, told the news provider: "It is great to see the British dining sector thriving with improved quality of food and drinks. Clearly pubs that offer food are those most likely to benefit from the smoking ban."

The International Agency for Research on Cancer said there is "sufficient evidence" that the health of people in hospitality jobs has benefited from smoking bans in western countries, particularly in decreasing respiratory symptoms.
