According to the Sunderland Echo, the town will get new cafes and restaurants in order to boost the image and popularity of the region.

New eateries in the pipeline or already in the town include Mango Indian, Martino's Italian and Pan Din Thai, with a cafe called Featherbed Rock also set to join the upcoming venues.

A new delicatessen will also open, creating 14 local jobs, after 18 months of work which will be done on the building.

Graham Tinkler, retail adviser with East Durham Business Service, told the newspaper he thinks around £1.5 million has been invested so far.

"People are willing to invest in them because they see it's become an attractive and popular place, especially with the marina coming," he said.

A £46 million regeneration in East Durham was announced earlier this year, with some of this funding also going towards revamping the docks in Seaham.

It is suggested the hard work and £1.65 million injected into the major revamp of the Bamburgh Castle Inn, in Seahouses, has paid off, according to the Publican.

When the second and third phases are due to be completed in autumn, a further 20 employment opportunities are expected to be created, says the newspaper.

Geoff Hodgson, chair of the North-east Tourism Advisory Board, told the source: "I am very proud that we have businesses of [this] calibre … to cater for the needs of visitors we are working hard to attract to the region, as well as for our own occupants."

The inn was formerly the Bamburgh Castle Hotel, named after its adjacent landmark, which is steeped in history and hence attracts many visitors to the area, according to the venue's website.

Accompanied by a number of restaurants, cafes, bars and offices, the four-star hotel building makes up part of a development known as Trincomalee Wharf and is expected to be seven storeys high, reports the Hartlepool Mail.

This suggests that restaurant work and pub jobs may also be in the offing should plans for the full development be given the go-ahead.

A development report claims the project "has the potential to provide a significant addition to the marina strengthening its role as a place to live, work and play", adding the hotel would be "particularly welcome".

The plans will be taken before a council committee on Wednesday who will decide if permission should be granted, however, according to the publication, councillors are being urged to support the plans.

Latest figures from the North East England website show that tourism contributes £3.4 billion towards the region's economy, with 8.5 million people "staying overnight" in 2006.

The project has been taken on by Lindisfarne Inns, the publication claims, which has appointed Sam Robinson and his partner Julia Baker as hotel managers, who possess over 50 years of experience in the hospitality industry between them.

"It is our aim to make the new Bamburgh Castle Inn an integral part of the community," said Ms Baker.

The couple's new acquisition will be open for bookings from July 1st.

Mr Robinson has won AA awards recognising his achievement as an executive chef in London, Stratford and Gloucestershire.

With 1,400 separate tourism-orientated businesses, Northumberland's visitor economy was recently noted for its individuality in the latest area tourism management plan for 2006-2009, in that it is comprised of a "large number of very small companies many employing five or less people".

"The people of north-east England have a deserved reputation for being friendly and hospitable so I'm confident that we will find many of our staff here in the region," said general hotel manager Deborah Haines.

Ms Haines also described how the new hotel jobs would be "genuine career opportunities".

The Radisson SAS is due to open its doors on November 1st 2008.

Largely orientated around the business industry, the luxury hotel's features include 209 guest rooms, a banqueting suite, ten meeting rooms and a catering capacity for around 600 delegates.

Financial difficulties due to rising labour and steel costs caused delays in the initial construction schedule, so this news comes three years after the initially planned launch date.

As part of a global hotel organisation which claims to be one of the fastest growing in the world, Radisson SAS currently has 21 hotels across the UK and Ireland and operates a total of 158 across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The restaurateur currently operates Oldfields Durham - which serves traditional British food and was recently named Durham Restaurant of the Year - but revealed in February that he planned to launch a new eatery in the centre of Newcastle.

Now the Journal reports that he has won permission to transform the basement of the historic Milburn House on Dean Street into a restaurant and is in the final stages of negotiations over the lease for the property.

The venue could create new chef and restaurant work roles in the city and is likely to attract plenty of diners, with the Journal reporting that Milburn House is conveniently located in an area popular among those looking for a good meal.

Mr Oldfield commented: "We will offer a dining experience currently unavailable in Newcastle.

Deborah Batley told the Evening the Gazette that she and business partner Sarah Hutchcraft have incorporated the principles of healthy eating into the dishes their firm creates for clients in the Teesside area.

"Because people are far more educated about what they should and shouldn't eat…we try to cater for that," she explained.

The pair had the idea for a contract catering firm specialising in healthy food last year and the firm has flourished since it launched, preparing seasonal menus using locally-sourced ingredients.

Ms Batley commented: "We had both worked in the pub trade and both had a great passion for food.

"We started with a leaving party at a local school and it has just spring boarded from there."

The contract catering sector in the north-east has shown further signs of activity in recent weeks, with the owner of Tyneside-based firm Sidney's around the Corner telling the Journal that the market is a big one.

Alan O'Kane owns Sidney's, an upscale Tynemouth eatery specialising in modern English cuisine, but told the Journal that he was keen to explore the opportunities the contract catering sector in the north-east has to offer.

He described the market as "big" and "not saturated so we could open something different".

Mr O'Kane, who has previously worked at the world renowned Savoy hotel in London, teamed up with local business leaders Sue and Richard Hooper of the Deli around the Corner to launch the new contract catering business, called Sidney's around the Corner.

"We both source ingredients from artisan suppliers and we both have very high standards, which is important if you are going into partnership with someone," Mr O'Kane explained.

The new firm has already landed a deal to supply food service at _space, an architecture and management firm based in Gosforth.

New chef and restaurant work roles have also been created by the new venture, with a total of three chefs and 15 waiting staff employed by the business.

A new hotel slated for the ocean-front Northumberland village of Seahouses is to lead to the creation of 40 new jobs, media reports suggest.

The Bamburgh Castle Hotel is to undergo a £1.5 million makeover now that it has come under the ownership of Lindisfarne Inns. It will be re-branded the Bamburgh Castle Inn.

All of the hotel's existing 20 rooms will be redesigned, while new construction will centre on a pavilion-style dining area overlooking the harbour as well as some ten brand new rooms.

The transformation is set to lead to the creation of some 40 new jobs, with vacancies for hotel managers, maintenance, domestic and hospitality staff expected to be listed in the coming months.

Commenting on the project, Lindisfarne Inns director Keith Liddell said: "We believe there is a growing requirement for accommodation which is high-quality yet functional in a location hot-spot such as this."

Building work will be carried out in two separate stages, with plans to have all refurbishment completed by mid-summer in time for the peak tourism season.

Dozens of hotel jobs are expected to open up in the north east of England after a deal was struck to convert a castle into a hotel.

Witton Castile in Witton le Wear has been sold for a cool £12.5 million, with the new owners planning to turn it into a luxury hotel complete with conference rooms and a honeymoon suite.

Located at the foot of the Pennines, the beautiful fortress is expected to attract a huge number of applicants looking for hotel jobs in the area.

According to the Northern Echo, if the plans are given the green light, up to 100 new positions would be created.

Speaking to the newspaper, Neil Willson, managing director of Marton Hall which bought the castle, said: "Witton Castle is a major investment and underlines our commitment to supporting leisure and tourism in the north east.

"As climate change concerns lead to more people deciding not to fly overseas for holidays, UK destinations will face greater demand."

Attractions which entice both Brits and foreign visitors to stay in hotels in the north east include Durham Castle and Cathedral and Hadrian's Wall.
